Cialis for the Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction

October 7th, 2011 by admin

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, is the inability to get or keep an erection. This is a debilitating condition that effects up to WHAT % of men in the United States, and can have an enormous impact of the self-esteem of the patients, as well as on intimate relationships. Luckily, this is highly treatable disorder as there are a number of highly effective medications that can be prescribed for it.

Tadalafil (sometimes known as Cialis) is a commonly prescribed medication for erectile dysfunction treatment. It is one of three medications in the U.S. approved for this purpose and is currently approved by the FDA. It is not unlike Viagra or Levitra in that it works by inhibiting PDE5, thus increasing blood flow to the penis during intercourse.

The dose taken when first starting tadalafil is 10 milligrams for the majority of men, and can be increased or decreased by 5 milligrams depending on how the patient responds. It is usually taken a short amount of time before engaging in sexual activity. Though it is recommended to take tadalafil once a day, some men find that the medication work for up to 48 hours, thus only a minimal amount of the drug is necessary in some cases, and decreases the chances of side effects.

Tadalafil is known to be an extremely adequate treatment for erectile dysfunction, completely reversing up to 80% of cases in those men who take it. It is possible, however, to experience adverse effects from tadalafil. Some men have complained of headaches, diarrhea, flushing of the skin, and prolonged erections after using the drug, but the vast majority of patients find the medication to be extremely tolerable. Tadalafil is considered by experts to be a relatively safe medication, but a few men, particularly those with underlying heart issues, are at higher risk for serious side effects such as chest pain and arrhythmia of the heart.

Florida urlogynecology and urology specialists will generally recommend using a medication like taladafil before trying more invasive procedures for erectile dysfunction.
